If you’re not training for it properly

By: Caitlin Victoria Gan

HYROX is currently booming everywhere right now. Everyone is talking about it, training for it, or posting about it on social media. But here’s my hot take: HYROX is trash if you are only doing it because of FOMO and not actually training for it.

Don’t get me wrong, I actually like HYROX, I’m currently training for HYROX myself, so I know how hard it actually is. HYROX is a combination of running with strength. At first, I thought it’s just running and some gym exercise so I just said to myself “How bad can it be?” turns out, it was BAD.

I think some people are joining just because everyone else is doing it. Seeing their friends sign up, watching HYROX videos on Instagram reels, TikTok, and seeing how people post their achievements looking like it’s easy to achieve and make you feel like you can do it too.

According to HYROX official website, the race combines both running and functional workout stations, where participants run 1km, then 1 functional workout station that is repeated eight times. People need to have both strength and endurance to get through it. Being able to lift heavy weights does not automatically mean you will be good at HYROX.

I also think there is a lot of pressure around proving that you are “fit” or “strong enough” by completing HYROX. Social media can make finishing the race look like a medal that proves you are healthy and disciplined. But I don’t think one race can prove that. HYROX I just one way to challenge yourself.

So, if you really want to do HYROX, go for it! But if you only signed up because your friends are doing it or you want the badge just to post for Instagram, ask yourself: Do I actually want to do HYROX, or do I just want to say I did it?

HYROX isn’t trash. Doing it unprepared just because of FOMO is.
