I think it’s time to stop pretending Disney adults aren’t weird. And before anyone starts leaving angry comments, I’m not talking about adults who genuinely enjoy the world of Disney. I’m talking about the point where fandom turns into obsession.
A recent, viral example of this is the Disneyland “Peter Pan Girl” situation. A woman named Toni has gone viral on TikTok for her awkward interactions with multiple Peter Pan actors at Disneyland after users uncovered years of posts showing her visiting the park, especially to interact with them. Her videos have sparked debate online over whether she’s just a dedicated fan or has gone too far with her obsessions.
Personally, I think it’s weird. Not because she likes Disney, but because a grown woman developed a parasocial relationship with the Peter Pan actors.
Interestingly, the internet has quickly turned it into entertainment. Users have posted compilations of Toni’s interactions with Peter Pan actors over the years, pulling up clips from her social media, including one in which he appears to skip away from her, only for her to catch up with him. One video that popped up on my screen even joked about Peter Pan’s POV after finally escaping the fan.
Toni’s viral interactions have prompted users to dig through the internet to find similar reactions from other Disney-obsessed adults. One user even created a compilation of interactions captioned “The Peter Pan Files” on TikTok, edited like a horror video, featuring some interactions and posts from the “Peter Pandom,” a Tumblr fandom centred around live-action portrayals of Peter Pan and the actors who played him, even giving them different nicknames like “Spieling Pan” and “Huggy Pan.”
Users have commented that Disneyland should allow its actors to break character in front of adults when necessary. And honestly, I agree. While staying in character is part of the Disney experience, performers shouldn’t have to sacrifice their own boundaries to maintain the magic. If a guest repeatedly makes a performer feel uncomfortable and does not take any hints, Disney should step in, and that means removing them and banning them if deemed necessary.
So maybe Disney adults are weird, but perhaps what’s weirder is the lack of recognition that the actors are real people with real boundaries. Disney has spent decades perfecting its magic. It’s time to better protect the people who create it.
