Squid Game Season2 is an original series launched by Netflix in 2025. It is a survival game concept produced by Siren Pictures and directed by Hwang Dong-hyuk. The second season broke the Netflix premiere audience record and became one of the most watched non-English dramas on Netflix worldwide.

The second season continues the core concept of the first season: ordinary players enter a closed game system, and survival is the only way out. According to Netflix’s official positioning, the drama continues to explore “extreme competition within controlled systems“, but its appeal mainly comes from its simple and easy-to-understand setting rather than complex plots. The most eye-catching thing at the beginning of the second season is not the change in the form of the plot. The return of the familiar 456 player, the game once again places the players in an isolated and highly controlled environment. The way of communication is limited and trust becomes fragile. The game has not yet begun, and there is already a tense atmosphere among the participants. Everyone is trying to react by guessing the intentions of others.

At the beginning of the first game, the structure is very simple, the rules are clearly explained, and everything is clear and easy to understand. However, as soon as the game starts, this sense of clarity disappears immediately. Ordinary behaviour quickly turned into an irreversible decision. Any reaction may revolutionise the outcome of the game.

What impressed me most was that in the early round of the game, I found that I no longer focussed on the “right” approach but began to observe people’s expressions before making a choice. The answer is no longer important. The important thing is to hesitate and observe how long the player will pause before trusting and acting. These pauses are beyond the limits of the screen and are difficult to describe in words. I remember feeling more nervous at that time than when the game was going on, because you can feel that an ordinary decision creates an irreparable situation.

As the game progresses, the pattern gradually emerges: a simple rule will be introduced in each round, but the real sense of oppression comes from human nature under pressure. Cooperation is not out of trust, but out of helplessness. Once there is a change, the alliance will collapse quickly. I don’t know when, I care more about eye contact between players than the rules of the game. Sometimes hesitation is more meaningful than the action itself.

In terms of visuals, the game uses strong contrasts. The game environment is clean and tidy and sometimes even warm, which is in stark contrast to the cruelty behind the game. This visual strategy has attracted the attention of many critics, and it enhances the feeling of players being manipulated and guided. Even in a state of stagnation, it is extremely tense.

Compared with the first season, the second season did not carry out structural innovation. It still repeats a familiar cycle – entering the game, understanding the rules, and facing risks. The cultural influence of the first season has triggered the audience’s speculation about the plot, but people on platforms such as IMDb and Netflix have discussed that it is this sense of familiarity that attracts the audience’s continuous participation.

The success of this series of works lies not only in the tense game, but also in its description of the speed and human nature of players’ adaptation in extreme stressful environments. Over time, both players and the audience began to accept the rules of the game. This transformation is very subtle and unforgettable at the same time.

From the perspective of digital narrative, the second season of Squid Game Season 2 is rooted in Netflix’s global streaming system. The way of the drama can continue to participate in the movie, and the algorithmic recommendation system increases the exposure rate. The audience’s viewing experience lies not only in the quality of the work itself, but also in how the company promotes and publicizes.

In general, the second season continues the narrative model of the first season and does not make a lot of structural innovations, but its storyline can still maintain the movie-watching experience.

I will give it 6.5/10 points.
