Spider-Man: Brand New Day or Same Old Story

After watching Spider-Man: Brand New Day for the second time this week, it became obvious to me why this is the Holland Spider-Man movie fans have actually asked for, riding on the back of the success of No Way Home which brought back both Andrew and Tobey. Peter Parker’s big transformation isn’t triggered by a cosmic entity or a new spider strain. Spidey’s change comes when MJ kisses her new boyfriend at a party that Parker was never invited to in the first place. Brand New Day flips the formula that Peter’s human side can affect his spider-man side rather than the other way round. How many times have we seen Peter sacrifice for Spiderman, Brand New Day Spiderman has to sacrifice for Peter, that shift Cretton achieves excellently.

The 4th solo-outing for Holland’s web-slinger released on July 31st 2026, and immediately crushed the domestic opening weekend record with an insane $360,091,572, beating Avengers: Endgame’s $357.1 million. Currently, Brand New Day globally rests in the $2.4 billion range. making it the 3rd highest-grossing movie of all time. Destin Daniel Cretton’s second crack at an MCU blockbuster carried much of the same charm Shang Chi did back in 2021, whilst showing glimpses of his more recent project Wonder-Man. He drops Peter into a New York that’s completely forgotten him. On paper, it sounds like hitting the reset button on a story we’ve grown so fond of. But, in practice, it’s a foundational story for Spider-Man moving forward, whilst respecting and acknowledging Holland’s past performances. Brand New Day also helps set a new status quo for the MCU moving forward surrounding ‘mutants’.

Stripped of his old life, post No Way Home, Peter has to rebuild from scratch, and the film decides to keep the plot reasonably predictable rather than flashy. Fans have wanted a more grounded Spider-Man story in comparison to the multiverse approach the greater MCU is taking. You can see Damage Control’s involvement coming from a mile away, not necessarily bad, just predictable. Where the movie truly stumbles is its approach to its antagonist. The stakes definitely land, however by the credit roll the antagonist feels completely irredeemable, which is very clearly an issue with how they have to take that character forward. This small crack is the only thing keeping Brand New Day from being a perfect Spider-Man outing, rather than just a good one.

Brand New Day can stack up with any of the best live action Spider-Man performances we have got in the past. No Way Home was a fun time in the cinemas, but if we’re being honest it was more fanfare dressed up as story, with the event carrying so little emotion. Retrospectively there are parts of that movie that feel dated even just 5 years later. Brand New Day flips this entirely. It slows right down, and allows Peter’s problems to feel small in size but important in weight. Cretton ages up the film’s themes alongside the audience. Kids watching Homecoming in 2017 are now adults and this movie finally meets them there rather than talking down to them. It’s the first Holland movie to invoke feelings comparable to Spider-Man 2, connecting audiences with Spiderman rather than happiness that Spider-Man is on our screens. Raimi’s second film is still the best Spider-Man movie ever made but Brand New Day is the closest Holland has come without using the power of Spider-man friendship.

Special shoutout to Jon Bernthal’s Punisher who was consistently entertaining throughout. He was responsible for the biggest laughs of the entire movie. Punisher has been an overall well fleshed-out character during his time in the MCU. Again, reflections of the ‘found-family’ themes from Shang Chi were obvious, intended and honestly hit the spot. Bernthal’s performances have been so good recently, it could land him a major project in the near future.

Visually, this is by far the best-looking Holland Spider-Man movie without a doubt. The colour grading and cinematography are regularly top tier. Without spoiling, a conversation between Peter and MJ on a rooftop was particularly stunning due to the lighting and framing of the scene. The dialogue holds up with the required spider-man ‘quips’ present. The chemistry between MJ, Ned and Peter is especially high, ironic given the nature of the plot. Zendaya’s performance is her strongest across all 4 Holland movies, with a more grounded, less try-hard take on the character.

Brand New Day isn’t perfect. The villain needed some more room to breathe, and Damage Control’s arc was telegraphed so early that it barely registered as a twist. But away from the mediocre villain, Brand New Day lets Peter age in real time, instead of just fighting bigger, badder threats in every sequel. This is a Holland Spiderman growing up with its audience instead of performing to it, and it’s exactly why it’s the one to beat until the next one swings in.
