Coconut oil is a new member of the superfood series after avocado, blueberry, and quinoa. The merchant promotes that taking it can help with weight loss, support heart health, applying can nourish the skin and hair, making it a versatile food.

No matter how healthy coconut oil is packaged by the market, it cannot change its essence as oil. In fact, over 80% of coconut oil is composed of saturated fat, which is twice that of lard. Harvard University has warned that coconut oil may lead to cholesterol accumulation in the body, increase the risk of heart disease and stroke. That is why it is not recommended for consumption.

Merchants try to package coconut oil as luxury as possible.

Even though studies have shown that the saturated fat component lauric acid contained in coconut oil is beneficial for blood lipids. But there is currently no evidence to suggest that coconut oil can achieve the legendary effects. The claim of drinking coconut oil to detoxify and lose weight is even more groundless.

The main harm of fat is related to cholesterol, its main source is saturated fatty acids in food. It can also be understood that foods high in cholesterol are also rich in saturated fatty acids. The Dietary Guidelines recommend limiting the intake of saturated fat to 10% or less of total calories.  According to PMC, for every 1% increase in blood cholesterol, the risk of coronary heart disease events increases by 2%. The increase in dietary intake and absorption of cholesterol can significantly raise the total cholesterol in the body’s blood.

Interview with Dr. Stephen Kopecky, a cardiologist, on the impact of coconut oil on heart health

“A study conducted 40 years ago compared butter, lard, beef fat, and coconut oil to see which one raises LDL cholesterol the most. Guess what, it is coconut oil. Don’t eat it, it really raises your bad cholesterol.”

– Cardiologist Dr. Stephen Kopecky
