No, I don’t want to watch your “Get Ready With Me”

In the wonderful world of TikTok influencers, you’ve probably seen a handful of GRWM (Get Ready With Me) videos. Whether you’re an active ‘doomscroller’ or an occasional user, it’s likely you have.

Most of these videos are harmless, a user doing their makeup or showing the clothes they plan to wear that day. However, sometimes users simply don’t know the boundaries of what to share online and what they probably could’ve kept to themselves.

Now, don’t get me wrong, these GRWM videos are far from boring; there is an entertainment factor that gains traction. A popular TikTok trend is GRWM, whilst I talk about a story, event, person, etc., that’s amusing to viewers.

This trend of sharing secrets and stories online for anyone to see has become extremely normalised. The phenomenon of oversharing is at an all-time high; both influencers and strangers air their dirty laundry to gain views. In their defence, this tactic does actually work.

Mikayla Nogueira is a TikTok influencer known for her makeup reviews and tutorials, which reach millions of views per post. She started her fame in 2020, during lockdown, when social media influencers came into the spotlight. She was seen as relatable for users who struggled with confidence. Throughout her debut, her content gradually became … weirder.

Mikayla’s GRWM videos have sparked controversy, more so for the cringe factor and oversharing. This one TikTok, in particular, of her getting ready for divorce has expanded into a 6-part series about her divorce day. Probably not something I’d consider filming and posting online, but to each their own!

It’s interesting to watch influencers post online about life events as if they’re talking to their close personal friends. For some, like Mikayla, this is their job, and the more drama an influencer is involved in, the more attention they gain.

But is there a line between what you should and shouldn’t be posting anymore?

Mikayla Nogueria doesn’t think so.
