Real Talk: I do not think 20 million people woke up this year and independently decided teal was their soulmate color. But scroll for five minutes and you’d think the entire internet got hit by the same lightning bolt at the same time – teal tops, teal nails, teal bags, teal everything, all within about six-week window. That’s not taste. That’s a costume everyone agreed to wear.

Funny thing about a “trend”: somebody had to start it. For teal, a forecasting agency named it the official Colour of the Year for 2026 – and Brandy Melville flooding stores with teal Priscilla pants, tanks, and henleys almost immediately after. Once the brand all teenager shops become the teal brand, mall stores started remaking near identical shades within weeks.

And somewhere in there, teal got quietly promoted to “the new black”. Half the captions on my feed treat it like it goes with everything – the same job neutrals used to do. But teal is not the new neutral. Teal is loud and picks fights with half your closet – it just looks effortless when a whole feed already agreed to wear it together. That sounds like peer pressure with better lighting to me.

My hot take, lowkey unpopular opinion, whatever you want to call it: the 2026 color trends are kind of tacky. Not because teal are ugly – it’s genuinely fine, but because most people wearing them don’t actually love the color — they’re LARPing as someone with “on-trend” taste. Very “I’m not like other girls” while wearing the same top as literally every other girl.
It’s giving meme, not fashion. Compare this fit check to this one – same shade, same pose, same script – and tell me that’s personal style and not two people running the same template. {see? I did it again}

It’s fine to be a little tacky and try a trend, if you know that’s what you’re doing. Just don’t confuse “I own this because everyone else does” with “I actually like this” – or “trendy” with “neutral”. Wear the teal because you like teal, not because you’re LARPing as someone who does.
