Filipinos become Tennis Fans Overnight. But how long will it last?

Alexandra Eala, may have created a tennis boom in the Philippines, but a viral moment does not mean it is going to last.

She  made history by becoming the first Filipino to win a WTA Tour singles title, defeating Jessica Pegula in the 2026 Mubadala DC Open. Her victory was followed by a wave of attention in the Philippines.

Tennis has never been as popular as boxing, basketball and volleyball. But when Eala wins, suddenly many people are talking about tennis. It’s great to see once again, taking pride in a homegrown athlete’s success.

Social media can make a moment look bigger as one victory can become viral. It helped turn Eala’s victories into national moments. A single win by an athlete can quickly spread across Facebook, TikTok, and Instagram. Videos of Eala’s journey are also circulating on the internet to acknowledge her hard work during her training stage. Filipino social media users are also sharing her signature reactions and shots on court, which have become part of her growing personal brand.

But this does not mean that it will create interest in the long term.

At the same time, Eala’s success could be the beginning of something positive. Her popularity might encourage and inspire more young Filipinos to play tennis and follow the sport. Her success has made the tennis and other racket sports more visible.

Filipinos may have become interested in tennis because of Eala, but the real question here is whether that interest last for a long time.

If Filipinos will continue to watch and support tennis even after she isn’t winning, then maybe she really is helping create a stronger tennis culture in the Philippines.
