You Can Imitate Heritage but Drake Will Never Imitate Virtue

2 years on from the drama between Kendrick Lamar and Drake, I believe Euphoria was the song that encapsulated the issues with Drake the most, none more evident than the crux of my personal problem with the wannabe rapper Drake, which is his obsession with being seen as something he never was.

Drake made his name in the music industry with some of the best Hip-Hop/RnB albums of all time. ‘Take Care’ is one of the best and most influential albums in modern music culture and is what the real Drake is to me and I believe also is to Kendrick Lamar. Not the overdone, egotistical attempt at being the King of the Rap game that he tries to push now.

Kendrick says on Euphoria ‘I like Drake with the melodies, I don’t like Drake when he act tough’ which I think could have been the only thing that Kendrick ever said in the entire feud. A child actor from Canada, who is bi-racial. Who never grew up knowing the struggles and oppression faced by those that are the real face of rap culture. Who is making songs revolving around those issues he knows nothing about?

That doesn’t sit right to me.

I don’t think it would sit right either to a kid from Compton L.A., who made an entire album based off of the life he lived in a self-titled mad city. To this man who knows what it’s like to lose people to gang violence, to be funneled into a life of crime by those around him. Hearing someone call themselves the ‘King’ of a genre and an art form that was shaped and formed by the people around him would no doubt drive him to a breaking point.

Will I get hate and pushback for this opinion. Probably.

To add to the hypocrisy of Drake’s fake rapper persona, recently he participated in a YouTube  20 v 1 dating show in which he barked for a ‘Goth Baddie’…his words not mine.

When Kendrick said ‘They Not Like Us’ I am not sure even he envisaged Drake showing how different he is from the rap culture in a way like this.

At the end of the day though Kendrick rose through the rap game, getting praise and promotion from LA natives that created the pathway for modern MC’s. While Drake lane-switched to chase an image and a genre that was never his.
