America’s Sweethearts: Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders depicts young female athletes and their aspirations to become team members on, arguably, one of the most famous cheer squads. Season 3 of the TV series, released on June 16th, 2026, portrays the power imbalance between the cheerleaders and the NFL authorities, built on gender inequalities. America’s Sweethearts, Season 3 highlights the enforcement of traditional beauty standards, behavioural expectations of young women and institutional pressures.

DCC Uniform Fittings

America’s Sweethearts: Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders takes a major step back in time, to where the size of a woman’s body determines her worth. With their tiny uniforms, cheerleaders are expected to maintain their body size for the entirety of the NFL season, and it has been evident that this has caused further issues for many of the women on the team.

Jenna Waller had previously auditioned for DCC in season 2, and since being a featured cast member in season 3 as a Rookie, her story has been extremely memorable. Waller highlights how the impact of being ‘cut’ from the season 2 audition process brought her to the lowest point of her life, experiencing major body image issues and eating disorders. She has stated that, although it was disheartening to be sent home, continuing as a DCC whilst experiencing these insecurities would have been detrimental. Waller is grateful for the time she was provided with to build up her confidence and become ready to re-audition, but unfortunately, not all cheerleaders get this opportunity. These young women are required to constantly have their bodies on display, whether that’s in a stadium full of thousands of NFL fans, or in a dance studio surrounded by mirrors and cameras. The cheerleaders cannot escape having their bodies used as the DCC brand, highlighting the enforcement of outdated beauty standards, resulting in the development of body insecurities.

The expectations of these young women are not just limited to their looks, but also their behaviours. Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders are expected to uphold traditional gender conventions with sophisticated politeness, reflecting as a modern southern belle archetype. Season 3 of America’s Sweethearts: Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders provides behind the scenes access into the reality of being a DCC, where the audience is able to understand the consequences faced when cheerleaders aren’t upholding their obedience. DCC Veteran, Kleine Powell, is known for being outspoken and bubbly, however, in certain moments this has been portrayed as disrespectful and rebellious. Early on in season 3 of the series, Powell has a meeting with coaches, Kelli Finglass and Judy Trammel, who proceed to critique her character and inform her about a lack of support from her other teammates. This manipulation has the ability to negatively impact a young woman’s self-esteem; however, Powell continued to be a successful team leader, despite this negative conversation, and has become a role model for many young females.

This has been similarly reflected in Faith Ward, a Season 3 rookie who faces the challenges of cultural adaptation as the second Australian to ever make the DCC Team. Ward holds stereotypical Australian traits, with a laid-back attitude, often being quite comedic and loud. She is also the only DCC that wears her hair in a ponytail, contradicting the traditional rituals of a Dallas Cowboys Cheerleader both through her background and her appearance. Due to this, Ward was receiving a fair amount of questioning from the DCC authorities and backlash from fans, but still remained professional and undisturbed, encouraging young women to push the boundary unapologetically.

DCC Rookie Makeovers

Faith Ward’s ponytail is a representation of each Cheerleaders’ individuality (or lack thereof). During the audition process, the young women have “makeovers” to develop their own style which are maintained throughout their time as a DCC. While this allows each woman to be recognisable in their own individual way, makeover choices are solely made by the coaches. This reflects the control of the DCC institution and demonstrates the lack of power that the cheerleaders have over their own appearances.

America’s Sweethearts: Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders shows behind-the-scenes footage of female athletes and how traditional gender rituals are imbedded into their experiences. While issues are still apparent, the Cheerleaders have been provided with a platform to be positive role models to young women, encouraging them to challenge outdated gender norms.
