Zootopia 2: Bigger, Louder—but Is It Deep Enough?

Zootopia 1 achieved great success worldwide once released in 2016, and the release of Zootopia 2 in November 2025 also received a lot of attention. It is undoubtedly successful from the perspective of business performance, as according to Box Office Mojo (n.d.), the film’s global box office reached approximately $1.87 billion; Disney officials also stated that the global viewing volume of the movie exceeded 32 million in the first week of its release on Disney+ (The Walt Disney Company 2026). These data indicate that Zootopia 2 was not only popular in cinemas, but also generated significant buzz on online platforms.

However, a movie with high box office and popularity does not necessarily mean that its content is perfect. Compared to the first installment, although Zootopia 2 had larger scenes, faster pace, and more characters, its thematic expression appeared somewhat chaotic. This movie still wanted to discuss real-life issues and sought to allude to human society through the animal world. However, it was not as focused and powerful as the first one. Instead, people had a feeling that it tried to cover everything but failed to provide any real depth.

Firstly, it must be acknowledged that Zootopia 2 is indeed a very good commercial animation. Halve (2025) mentioned in the film review that this sequel continues the humor and warmth of the previous installment while adding more freshness, indicating that “Flash can strike twice”. From the perspective of viewing experience, this evaluation is reasonable, for the chase scenes, humor design, and character interactions in the film are all quite smooth, and the new characters also add a lot of appeal to the story. Such a fast-paced, beautifully illustrated, and family friendly animated film is indeed easy to earn favor for ordinary viewers.

But the problem lies here, because it feels too much like a movie trying to please everyone. Pailson (2025) points out that Zootopia 2 attempts to simultaneously discuss multiple issues such as migration, capital, prejudice, and social inequality, resulting in a “ambitious but chaotic allegory”. This comment is very accurate. The main plot lacks focus, leaving many issues addressed only superficially without being fully explored due to excessive content the movie intends to convey. Hence, the audience may feel that it seems to preach lots of grand moral lessons, yet little truly stays with them.

This gap is particularly evident compared to the first film. What made the first Zootopia so memorable was not simply its talking animals and clever city setting, but more importantly, it used a simple and clear story to discuss reality of prejudice. The changing relationship between rabbit Judy and fox Nick allows the audience to see how misunderstandings arise and how prejudice affects a society. Thus, this film has a very clear central theme, which makes it easy to provoke thought although it is an animation.

While the sequel continues to use the animal kingdom as a metaphor for human society, it has clearly become more restrained. For example, Halve (2025) have mentioned the use of “snake”, often considered dangerous and sinister, to discuss why people feel those who look dangerous while ignoring those who truly hold power. This perspective is actually quite interesting, because it aligns with stereotypes in the real world. Unfortunately, the movie did not delve deeper into this topic, but quickly returning to a lively adventure. In other words, it touches the problem without truly exploring them in depth.

From the perspective of digital communication, the success of Zootopia 2 also suggests that the influence of a movie depends not only on its content, but also on the way it is disseminated online. Gallagher (2017) points out that in a digital environment, content creators must contend not only with real audiences, but also with the recommendation systems and algorithms built into platforms, as these mechanisms determine whether their works can reach a wider audience. Therefore, the strong box office performance, alongside high streaming viewership of Zootopia 2, reflects the new characteristics of film distribution in the digital age. In other words, this movie is not just a piece of work, but a cultural product constantly amplified by platforms, traffic, and social media.

Lang (2026) also notes the film’s strong performance in the North American market, making it one of the top contenders for the 2025 domestic box office title, which demonstrates its strong commercial appeal. This indicates that audiences are still willing to pay for animated movies of this kind, and also highlights that Disney’s strength in managing established IPs. However, commercial success does not automatically prove the sequel equally successful in terms of ideology. The true challenge is not making the spectacle bigger adding more characters, but whether it can go deeper than the original.

Overall, I believe Zootopia 2 is a successful commercial animation, but not a particularly breakthrough sequel. It remains entertaining, intelligent, and even more polished in terms of entertainment value than the original. Therefore, if Zootopia 2 is viewed as a family-friendly animation, it is certainly commendable; but as a film that aims to keep engaging with real-world issues, it seems not bold enough. It is indeed vibrant and successful, but it may not have truly caught up with its first installment in terms of depth.
