Innovation and Ethical Problems: A Critical Analysis of ABO Desire

In 2025, ABO Desire was released as China’s first TV drama to adapt the ABO world-building for the screen, bringing the once-fan-exclusive genre to the mainstream. Adapted from a web novel, the series has a core setting where a virus creates new human gender divisions and builds a complete social hierarchy of Alpha, Beta, Omega, and Enigma. The series has sparked widespread discussion; it has a rating of 7.8/10 on Mydramalist and earned a peak single-episode score of 9.1/10 on IMDb, ranking among the most popular BL dramas. While the show has broken the creative limits of BL dramas with its unique world-building, polished visual presentation and adaptation of niche culture, it fails to reach a well-rounded quality due to inconsistent plotting, controversial romantic relationships and flat characters.

The most notable strength of ABO Desire is its complete world-building and innovative presentation. Unlike traditional BL that prioritizes romance, the series presents the complete Omegaverse system on screen, building a fictional world based on biological hierarchy, estrous cycles, and power ranking rules.  According to University of Groningen’s Omegaverse research, the core significance of this genre is to challenge the fixed patterns of gender power. In real life, power is often tied to male and female identities. In contrast, power and dominance in the ABO system are determined entirely by secondary genders (Alpha, Beta, Omega), a system that fully separates power from gender identity, thereby breaking the traditional stereotype that men are strong and women are weak. Meanwhile, the research also emphasizes that the ABO system transforms hidden social norms of gender oppression into visible fictional structures, allowing audiences to directly perceive how physical traits define social hierarchy.

Furthermore, the series is good at highlighting intense emotions through lighting and composition. The use of light and dark distinguishes power status, while tight compositions strengthen the sense of oppression within the ABO system, make the picture more impactful and improve the infectious power of the plot.

From the perspective of the theme, this series has broadened the variety of BL dramas, proving that BL works are not just limited to traditional love stories but can also explore complex social stories, which not only opens up new paths for niche culture, but also confirms the solid market potential of the Omegaverse genre.

However, the series still has some problems in its narrative and ethics. From Episodes 7 to 12, the plot is filled with repetitive conflicts, including unnecessary misunderstandings between the main characters, as well as the overuse of suppressants, and supporting roles that lack sufficient development. These problems restrict the narrative development and make the overall story fragmented. As MyDramaList reviews indicate, many viewers regard inconsistent pacing as its biggest defect. More importantly, the show involves severe ethical controversies in emotional relationships by including multiple coercive plots driven by the physical setting.  In Episode 8, an Alpha loses consciousness after an Omega’s targeted pheromone attack, followed by non-consensual intimacy, the show never addresses this violation of bodily autonomy.

Many viewers state that it blurs the boundary between love and being coerced, distorting their understanding of healthy relationships. Finally, the complex setting creates a high barrier for viewers, people unfamiliar with Omegaverse may struggle to follow the plot, confining the show to niche BL fans and narrowing its audience.

The series reflects a contradictory industry trend that combines rapid aesthetic innovation with insufficient ethical awareness. Commercially, it proves the commercial value of niche culture and offers a new direction for BL drama creation. Its success encourages the industry to step outside traditional romance and attempt innovative character settings. Culturally, this drama has caused a lot of debate about feelings, intimate scenes and genre choices. It brings ABO culture to an audience and makes people think about how fictional worlds affect real emotions. Nevertheless, it reveals a critical problem, some creators put artistic innovation over ethical guidance, and the show uses unequal power and non-consensual relationships as main attractions without critical reflection. This kind of unbalanced plot structure also draws boundaries for similar works, film and television works cannot beautify forced relationships, and cannot give up the guidance of ethical values for aesthetics, creators must balance between innovation and morality.

Ultimately, ABO Desire is a landmark but flawed work, reflecting the double-edged sword nature of niche genre innovation. ABO Desire adds the creative depth of BL productions, but it also exposes obvious shortcomings in narrative rhythm, ethical expression, and character development. The meaning of the series is not perfection, but an exploration for the BL industry, it has opened new ideas for the BL field, and also show that niche culture is destined to face many challenges when it goes to the masses.
