Influencer Don’t Influence- Algorithms do

We love to blame influence for everything- what we wear, what we buy, even where we eat. But what if they don’t? What if the real power isn’t a person at all, but a system quietly deciding what shows up on our screen?

After five minutes of scrolling Instagram or TikTok, you’ll notice something strange. The same outfits, same coffee shops, and the same trending music. It feels like everyone is suddenly obsessed with the same things, and that’s not just a coincidence. Platforms like Instagram and TikTok don’t just show you content from people you follow. They use feeds that are driven by algorithms and prioritize posts based on engagement. To put it simply, what you see is selected specifically for you. This analysis of the TikTok algorithm explains how variables like watch time, likes, and shares influence what content is spread to a wider audience.

Which means influencers aren’t really in control, they don’t decide what goes viral, they’re selected by the system. They become more visible and influential if the system pushes their content to more users. If not, they disappear into the endless scroll. That’s why smaller creators can suddenly go viral overnight, while bigger influencers can sometimes struggle to reach their audience. It doesn’t matter who you are — it’s about whether the algorithm chooses you.

To see how this works in practice, here is a video explaining how algorithms shape what users see online. What becomes visible is actively shaped by algorithms, not just by users.

Even outside of social media, it’s becoming clear how much power these systems hold. According to a Guardian article, TikTok’s “For You Page” feature allows the platform to decide what becomes popular by pushing content to users, regardless of who they follow. If visibility is controlled by the system, then influence isn’t earned — it’s assigned.

So when you suddenly find yourself wanting something you’ve seen “everywhere,” it’s important to ask yourself: Did an influencer really convince you, or did the algorithm make sure you saw it enough times to believe you chose it yourself?

Influencers might be the face of trends, but they’re not the ones in charge. The real influencer is invisible, constantly learning, and always one step ahead — the algorithm.
