Be Careful What You Wish For: Obsession

Obssesion poster

What happens when someone gets exactly what they have always wanted, only to discover that their wish was a terrible mistake? Obsession, directed by Curry Barker, takes this frightening idea and turns it into an entertaining mix of horror, dark comedy, romance, and psychological tension. Although the film begins with a familiar story about unrequited love, it quickly develops into something much darker and more disturbing. With its unusual concept, strong performances, and clever exploration of obsession and unhealthy desire, Obsession is one of those horror films that is not only scary but also surprisingly thought-provoking.

The film follows Bear, a socially awkward young man who has secretly been in love with his friend and co-worker, Nikki, for a long time. However, Nikki does not feel the same way about him and sees him only as a friend. Bear struggles to accept this rejection, even though Nikki has been clear about their relationship. His situation changes when he discovers a mysterious object called the “One Wish Willow.” Believing it could solve all his problems, Bear makes a wish for Nikki to love him more than anything else in the world. At first, it seems like his dream has finally come true. Nikki suddenly becomes completely devoted to him, giving Bear everything he thought he wanted. However, Bear soon realises that forcing someone to love him has created something unnatural and terrifying.

What makes Obsession particularly good is the way it transforms a romantic fantasy into a horror story. Many romantic films suggest that persistence can eventually make someone fall in love with you. Obsession, however, questions this idea by showing the disturbing consequences of wanting control over another person’s feelings. Bear believes that being loved by Nikki will make him happy, but he slowly discovers that love without freedom or choice is not really love at all. This makes the film more meaningful than a typical supernatural horror movie.

The film is also successful because it balances horror with dark humour. The early scenes are relatively light and almost feel like the beginning of a quirky romantic comedy. This makes the later horror scenes even more shocking because the audience does not immediately know how dark the story will become. The gradual change in tone is one of the film’s strongest features. Instead of beginning with constant jump scares, Obsessionslowly creates an uncomfortable atmosphere and allows the tension to build.

A serene moment between Bear and Nikki before the terrifying effects of his wish

Michael Johnston gives an interesting performance as Bear. He is not presented as a completely evil character, which makes him more frustrating and, in some ways, more realistic. His insecurity and desperation are understandable, even when his decisions become increasingly selfish. Inde Navarrette is equally impressive as Nikki, particularly because her character has to shift between different emotional states throughout the film. Her performance adds much of the film’s unsettling energy and makes several scenes genuinely uncomfortable to watch.

Another reason Obsessionworks so well is that its horror comes from an idea that feels emotionally relatable. Most people understand what it feels like to want someone who does not return their feelings, but the film takes that ordinary experience to an extreme and supernatural level. It explores rejection, insecurity, entitlement and the dangerous belief that love is something another person owes you. The magical element may be fictional, but the emotions behind Bear’s obsession feel uncomfortably real.

Overall, Obsession is a clever and entertaining horror film that offers more than just frightening moments. Its strongest quality is its ability to turn the idea of perfect romance into something disturbing and unnatural. The combination of dark humour, supernatural horror, and social commentary makes the film engaging from beginning to end. While some viewers may find the story uncomfortable because of its intense themes, that discomfort is also what makes the film memorable. Obsession proves that sometimes getting everything you want can be much more terrifying than never getting it at all.

I will give an 8/10 for this movie.
