Ariana Grande’s newest album “ petal ” has divided both critics and listeners alike.
“Ariana Grande’s temper tantrum is like being attacked by a lovely butterfly.” The Telegraph’s four-star review.
“She can be so magnificent – so why is her new album so listless and bland? Sometimes “ethereal” can be a byword for bland.” The Independent’s two-star review.
“Eternal sunshine felt like an artist’s evolution and petal is a complete regression. Boring, bland, unfresh and wholly unmemorable. A nothing burger where zero songs stand out. Nothing on petal is better than any song on sweetener or eternal sunshine.” @SURVlVALHORROR on X.
“Petal really is Ariana’s best album like wow this album sounds so fresh every time you listen it’s going to age so well.” @troystwt1 on X.

Produced and written by her and Ilya Salmanzadeh, Petal is an experimental album that toes the line between the dark pop genre and an almost alternative grunge sound that feels different. Her usual high vocal range is mostly gone and is replaced by an angelical lower registered tone of a voice of someone who has something to say. This album is the evolution of an artist who knows who she is as a musician and doesn’t feel the need to prove it to anyone anymore.

I think Petal is Ariana Grande’s best album. You can call me biased due to the fact that I have decided to write about this purely because Petal has become my personal favourite out of her entire discography and the criticism really confused me. To me, the criticism of her lack of vocal experimentation and production is invalid because her lowered vocal tones and production really suit the darker aesthetic of the album. If you want more of her voice in her higher register go listen to the rest of her discography. Her listeners have been wanting her to experiment more with her music for years and now that she has given that to them all of a sudden it’s not good?
In our current online world where everyone and their opinions is in your face; I think it has been forgotten that everyone has different personal tastes. Just because you don’t like something, does not mean it’s bad. It just means it wasn’t to your personal preference, and that’s okay.
