A newly released anime that uses a simplistic art style similar to older Japanese animated shows, Daemons of the Shadow Realm, blends traditional and modern artistic techniques for storytelling. This ongoing anime came out in April 2026, consisting of 24 episodes available on Crunchyroll, with its last episode airing on 12th September 2026. This series centres around a pair of powerful twins, born under the sun and moon, who got separated when they were young. The blonde-haired Yuru had been left behind in an old, rural village while his black-haired sister, Asa, had escaped with their parents. Ten years later, Asa comes back to save Yuru from the village, in hopes to find their lost parents together.
Reliving the comfort of old times
This series uses an art style that somewhat resembles certain older anime series through its simplistic aesthetic such as having lesser details in the character designs. The art style also includes using more solid colour tones rather than the complex blending of colours that most modern anime series use. Some audiences feel a sense of nostalgia when watching this new series especially since its illustrator also created Fullmetal Alchemist, which is an old popular anime that came out in July 2001. The art style also ties into how Yuru’s village is set in a rural environment, resembling the Edo-period, giving it that reminiscent quality the audience naturally feels. This brings out the assumption that the series would have a traditional perspective, partly due to where the story takes place and the nostalgic art style, but the storyline further continues to explore a progressive outlook between genders.

Gender equality becomes a recurring theme throughout the series
Certain characters in the show obtain ‘Daemons’, a pair of female and male ancient deities with unique powers, through forming a contract by placing their own blood on the relics of the deities. The same day that Asa came to Yuru’s village, Yuru obtains his ‘Daemons’. His guardian slams Yuru’s head onto the relics of the deities, Right and Left, forming a contract with them through Yuru’s spilled blood. The character designs of Right, the male, and Left, the female, are both equally portrayed with a defined, muscular physique that challenges the typical designs of female characters having a slender, hourglass body figure.
Regarding their powers, they both also have similar strength, agility and combat skills. The main differences are their personalities where Left is calm and level-headed while Right is rowdier and vigorously passionate. Besides them, all ‘Daemons’ have an equal partner in power and embodies a balanced dynamic that represents Yin and Yang.

Sibling dynamic pushes boundaries in a questionable way
As the series explores the twins finding each other and gradually bonding after years apart, the dynamic between Yuru and Asa becomes concerning as Asa increasingly obsesses over getting Yuru’s attention. Some audiences receive Asa’s need for Yuru’s attention as a innocent younger sister who just wants to create a strong bond with her older brother, to compensate for missing out on having a regular childhood together. On one hand, that innocent perspective is understandable as siblings who grew up apart would naturally want to quickly create a bond with their long-lost sibling. On the other hand, the way the anime portrays their interactions is relatively similar to the interactions between a young girl having a crush on a boy. This viewpoint inherently creates an uncomfortable impression for viewers as they face an inner conflict over deeming whether the twins’ interactions should be considered socially acceptable or not.
Overall, this anime evokes the feelings of nostalgia and comfort by beginning the story in a traditional setting yet progressively challenges traditional values surrounding gender roles. The concept of the characters acquiring ‘Daemons’ is interesting, especially with the representation of gender equality by establishing balanced power dynamics between all male and female characters. Daemons of the Shadow Realm is an intriguing watch, with a hint of a controversy to balance out its strengths and weaknesses, making it a highly recommended anime series.
