Hot takes are a particularly high-energy opinion piece. Usually short, these bursts of an author’s perspective are usually extremely topical and reactive to some recent event in close-to real time. These take advantage of the speed of online publishing and can often generate significant conversation due to their polemic nature. Not all the conversation will be agreeing with the author, but this is part of the point.

Your Hot Takes Should:

  1. Reflect the purposes and characteristics of short-form blog post writing as described in the course materials.
  2. Be approximately 400 words in length.
  3. Take a clear perspective on the issue.
  4. Bring some original, personal thought expressed from your perspective.
  5. Explain or contrast your perspective with/to at least two references to outside sources using hyperlinks.
  6. Include an image, diagram, or other media to help illustrate your point.
  7. Be accurate, compelling, and free of errors.
