Who says murder mysteries must be miserable, dark and tense? With a delightfully cozy twist, The Thursday Murder Club completely changes the genre. Imagine a peaceful English village, endearing retirees, and just enough murder to keep things interesting. Since I’ve always enjoyed murder mysteries and am constantly looking for new perspectives, I immediately clicked “Remind Me” when this movie appeared. I had no prior knowledge going in because I hadn’t read any of Richard Osman’s best-selling books, but I ended up being engrossed. And I wasn’t mistaken when I said that this warm and entertaining mystery might have been one of my all-time favorites.

A Cozy Mystery That Feels Like Home

The Thursday Murder Club is set against the backdrop of Cooper’s Chase, a serene retirement community in the English countryside. Every Thursday, four retirees get together to solve cold cases for amusement. The group consists of Helen Mirren’s witty former spy Elizabeth, Pierce Brosnan’s fiery former union leader Ron, Ben Kingsley’s thoughtful psychiatrist Ibrahim, and Celia Imrie’s deceptively kind former nurse Joyce.

Their pastime takes a serious turn when a local murder occurs, and the group sets out to solve the case on their own. The film’s heart is found in its tender, humorous character interactions and the way it delicately examines themes of aging, friendship, and purpose, despite its seemingly straightforward setup.

The Charm Behind the Crime

As a big fan of murder mysteries, I’ve discovered that the best ones have characters you want to follow, even when the stakes aren’t very high, rather than just clever twists. That’s exactly what the Thursday Murder Club knows. It doesn’t depend on fast-paced pursuits or unexpected revelations every five minutes. Rather, it is a slow-burning, character-driven mystery that uses subtle humor, and an impressive emotional core to win your heart.

Its cast of unlikely detectives who are retirees that are far older than the target audience for most crime thrillers makes it even more novel. Seeing four seniors take charge of a murder case feels both unique and strangely empowering in a genre that is dominated by young adults. Instead of being seen as absurd, their age is seen as a strength that lends humor, life experience, and a distinct perspective to the mystery.

Another notable aspect is the chemistry between the leads. Their bond feels like that of lifelong friends working together to solve cases; it goes beyond just them being amateur detectives. Because of the group’s bond and unique individuality, it helped contribute warmth and charm, which is not only a clever murder mystery but also a very moving and memorable watch.

Not Having Read the Books Made Watching a Fresh Experience

I had no expectations into watching the film because I hadn’t read the books, which made the plot seem interesting. I was itching to learn more about the characters’ stories because it felt new, and they were immediately captivating. I can’t wait to begin reading Richard Osman’s Thursday Murder Club books now that I’ve learned that he has written four of them and that a fifth is coming soon, entitled “The Impossible Fortune”

What’s amazing is that, despite learning about some of the little changes and adaptations from the original book, thanks to ELLE, of course, I still thought the film was great. If anything, these modifications heightened my interest in the original publication. It’s an obvious indication that the movie is a stand-alone film while still enticing viewers to delve deeper into the more complex, multi-layered world it depicts.

Success on Netflix and Future Potential

On August 28, The Thursday Murder Club debuted on Netflix worldwide. It swiftly rose to the top of the US streaming charts, surpassing other recent releases to the top spot, according to People.

With four books already published and a fifth on the way, I completely agree with those who believe that this story should be turned into a series, whether it be a TV show or a few more movies.  There is a sense that the characters, their histories, and the mysteries they might solve are ready for more in-depth investigation.

According to Entertainment Weekly, the cast appears prepared to make a comeback, and director Chris Columbus has indicated interest in adapting the sequels. In preparation for upcoming releases, the production crew even saved the movie’s sets.

A Surprise Hit: Why This One’s a New Favorite

As a fan of murder mysteries, I’ve seen a lot of adaptations, ranging from contemporary blockbusters like Knives Out and Only Murders in the Building to classic Agatha Christie stories. The Thursday Murder Club has become known for its humorous banter, endearing characters, and the unique perspective of senior detectives who show that there is no age limit on solving mysteries.

It serves as a reminder that murder mysteries can be both witty and reassuring, a unique combination that entices me to rewatch and recommend it to friends. Netflix even began recommending related shows with the same warm, witty tone, some of which I’ve already liked and found to be just as enjoyable.

This film has all the elements of a traditional cozy mystery, but it also has a sentimental tone and new, real characters. It’s humorous without losing suspense, emotional without being overly dramatic, and intelligent without being intimidating.
