An Amazing Game Collaboration: Reverse 1999 x Assassin’s Creed

The collaboration version of Reverse:1999 x Assassin’s creed had launched globally on August 7, 2025. The famous characters Ezio Auditore da Firenze and Kassandra will be available through special limited-time banners. It’s a rare collaboration between video game and mobile game. Since the collaboration started, it has received a tidal wave of praise.

Many game-lovers are familiar with Assassin’s creed, but they may not familiar with Reverse:1999. Reverse:1999 is a 20th Century Time-Travel Strategic RPG game produced by a Chinese company named Bluepoch. It first launched in China and its global game server launched later. This collaboration is the first-ever globally synched update.Since its launch in October 2023, Reverse: 1999 has attracted over 30 million players worldwide and has topped charts in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, France, Japan, Korea and more than 160 countries and regions around the globe. The title generated more than $100 million in little over a year, evidently making it an attractive crossover partner for Ubisoft.

The first word that came to my mind when I played this collaboration activity is “respect”.It’s hard to make players truly feel the sincerity behind a collaboration. The essence of such a crossover lies in finding the overlapping audience between two areas, discovering a shared sense of belonging and identity, and then drawing newcomers from each other. From this perspective, 1999’s collaboration choice with Assassin’s Creed was very challenging as the game is such a “classic”. Assassin’s Creed ‘s remarkable artistry is very famous, yet it’s also a 16-year-old work that may let young players feel distant. The challenge is how to faithfully recreate this masterpiece while letting young audience experience its charm.

1999’s answer was approaching it from surface to the depth. The most immediate example lies in the audiovisual presentation, where the collaboration amplifies the original’s most iconic memories. For instance, upon entering the event’s main menu, players are greeted by the original Ezio’s Family, the theme music that runs through the whole history of Assassin’s Creed II and is one of the strongest symbols of it. In an instant, it delivers that grand and weighty first impression of the original to the players.

You can also sense the art team’s grasp of detail. Ezio, the central figure of the new version, his appearance retains the original’s iconic combination of a white outer garment and a red robe. But beyond this “one-to-one reproduction,” the red in his outfit appears more vivid, enhancing the impression of a “fatal wound” and the aura of a “dangerous assassin.”

And perhaps because of this familiarity with the original, the writers knew well of players’ expectation. In Assassin’s Creed II, Ezio, as controlled by players, is virtually unstoppable, yet he is ultimately portrayed as a solitary, nameless hero. In 1999’s script, however, players no longer is Ezio but become his companion, able to stand beside him and tell him “You are not alone , your creed has already been remembered by countless others.” It’s a unique kind of romance, born from 1999’s time-traveling mechanics and the encounter with a “historical figure” across centuries.
